Mock Assessment: Solo Project
What theorist will I be exploring?
For your mock solo project, you have been asked to explore the theatre theorist, Constantin Stanislavski.
You have also been given a text from which to select the monologue which will define your Mock Solo Project.
What theory will I explore?
You have researched some of the ideas related to Stanislavski's System within practical workshops in class and have also engaged with his theories by sourcing primary and secondary texts to explore his ideas in detail. Your research notes should be detailed in your Journal.
You should select two aspects of theory from The System and use them to develop your monologue in rehearsal. You will be exploring these two aspects of theory from The System from the perspective of the performer and director only.
(Note: For your Solo Project, you will also need to explore design choices, but for you mock we will just explore from the performer/director's perspective).
As you are solely approaching this from these perspectives, you will be examining how these two aspects of theory affected the development and the performance of your character in your monologue.
Structuring your Report
There is no specific way you HAVE to structure your report. However, to gain confidence and to begin to feel comfortable with the assessment criteria, I suggest mirroring the exemplar on the Solo Project Page and structuring the report in line with the assessment criteria.
Section 1:
The Theorist, the Theory and the Context
To evidence in your report:
- To what extent does the student research the context(s) of the theatre theorist and theories?
- To what extent does the student demonstrate an understanding of the selected aspect(s) of theatre theory?
- To what extent have primary and secondary sources been selected and used?
In this first section of your report you should introduce Constantin Stanislavski and his theories on Realsim and how it influences the context and the style of your solo project.
You should justify your choice of this particular theorist by explaining your interest in their ideas. What inspired you to choose this particular theorist?
Provide an overview of Stanislavski's theories within the context of Realism and explain which aspect(s) of theory you are choosing to focus on when developing your performance. Justify these reasons.
Section 2:
Practical Explorations and the development of solo theatre piece
To evidence in your report:
- To what extent does the student demonstrate a thorough understanding of the process of creation in their approach to practically exploring the selected aspect(s) of theory.
- To what extent does the student explain their vision for their final piece and the process of creating their solo performance?
- To what extent does the student reflect on feedback from their teacher, peer mentor or theatre class, explaining the impact this has had on their work?
During this section of the report you should discuss your vision for your solo project. What is your artistic intention? What would you like to achieve as an artist?
Discuss your practical exploration of the two aspects of theory you selected and explain how this enabled you to develop a solo performance in the style of Realism. Throughout this discussion refer to how these aspects of theory aided your characterisation process to enable you to create a realistic character. You should also explore how these aspects of theory influenced your directorial process.
Section 3:
Analysis and Evaluation of the solo theatre piece.
To evidence in your report:
- To what extent does the student evaluate the final presentation of the solo performance of the solo theatre piece and consider the extent to which their intentions were met?
- To what extent does the student evaluate the impact their solo theatre piece had on the audience?
- To what extent does the student reflect on what they learned through the experience of the creating the solo theatre piece and the implications this has for their work on theatre?
Following the performance of your solo project, you must evaluate your final performance and discuss how successful you were in achieving your artistic intention. You should refer to both the challenges you faced as well as the successes.
You must analyse the impact that the performance had on the audience, referring to specific feedback from them.
