Preparation Tasks
In preparation for your Mock Director's Notebook please complete the following tasks:
What is the role of a theatre director?
A director is responsible for the staging of the play. He or she interprets the play text and identifies his or her directorial intentions regarding how the play will be presented and the impact he or she wishes to have on a particular audience. The director works with actors and a production team to stage the play, transforming ideas into action.
1. Please watch the interviews of two very different directors below:

3. Record your thoughts and ideas individually in your journals.
Mind Map Task: Theatre in Context:
To achieve a high level mark for Criterion A for this assessment you need to engage in preparation that will enable you to effectively articulate the context of the play and recognise the central ideas/themes within the play text.
With reference to your chosen play create four mind maps in your journal:
- Historical Context - Play Text
- Historical Context - Period play was written
- Cultural Context - Play Text
- Cultural Context - Period play was written
You must include appropriate citations to support this work, so please include relevant sources within your mind map.
Cultural Context
The most powerful forces in a society include religion, gender roles, attitudes towards sex and marriage, social status/class, job opportunities/emigration, (wealth/poverty), politics, authority figures, stereotypes/ethnic identity.
After you have completed these mind maps, begin to write a section to introduce the play text, the context and central ideas within the play text. There is a strong example of this section detailed in Example 1 on the previous page with reference to The Crucible.
This section should be completed by Monday 12th January.
